Recon to Three Fingers Lookout

Siew Moi, Norm and I hiked up to Three Fingers Lookout on the 8/23-8/24 weekend to get a damage assessment of the lookout.
Took us 8 hours to hike up and 6 hours to hike out (the latter includes additional time for me to recover and climb out after I took a 100-150ft tumble down a steep ice field; nope, there are no blood and gore pictures of me :-), thank god)

  • Trailhead can't be reached due to a mudslide blocking the forest road about 1.5 miles before the TH.<br />
Siew Moi and Norm next to my truck, ready to get going.
  • At the trailhead; has some winter damage: sign is down, register box is gone (likely below one of the toppled trees)
  • why would someone use the trailhead's sign for target practice??
  • Lower 2 miles of trail are a bit rough and over roots and plenty of water running in treads

  • about halfway to Saddle Lake: crossing the debris field of a avalanche
  • First peek to Three Fingers!
  • Saddle Lake, 2.5miles after the TH. Looks lovely but is quite mosquito infested
  • Got to Goat Flat, 5 miles from TH, looking North to Mt Baker.
  • Past Goat Flat, traversing over to get into the Tin Can Gap basin
  • Looking South, broad mountain with the snow specks at horizon is Mt Pilchuck
  • Finished traverse, first look up to Tin Can Gap: The green saddle in the middle of the picture.
  • Siew Moi catching a quick breath before we head through the basin
  • Another view to Tin Can Gap, now the green saddle 3/4 to the right
  • En route to Tin Can Gap
  • Crossing first snow fields towards Tin Can Gap
  • Enjoying the view towards SE; but we're still not up on TCG
  • A view towards Mt Rainier we enjoyed
  • Final ascend towards Tin Can Gap; we're now at noon time and the trail gets steeper
  • At Tin Can Gap, 6 miles from the TH! First glimpse at the lookout, it's that grey speck on top of the 2nd finger from the right
